On 18 March 2025, the Albanian translation of the book “Religion and Politics of Identity in Kosovo” —”Religjioni dhe politikat e identitetit në Kosovë”—by our project leader, Ger Duijzings, was launched in Prishtina. The public discussion, with the author and the translator Enes Lekiqi present, was moderated by the publisher and Kosovo anthropologist Arsim Canolli. It took place in the well-known Dukagjini Bookstore in the city centre of Kosovo’s capital.
Initially published in 2000, this book remains relevant for understanding societies where religion plays a crucial and often controversial role in shaping identities and identity politics. The author’s main argument is that the region’s history is defined by coexistence, cultural contact, and religious exchange, identities being marked by ambiguities providing coping and survival strategies in times of violence and insecurity.
