From 30 September to 2 October 2026, seeFField seed funding fellow Dr Elife Krasniqi hosts the international workshop “Researching African Populations in Southeast Europe” at the University of Graz.
Scholars from history, anthropology, sociology and visual studies will discuss how to research the presence of African and African-descended populations in the region, which goes back to the Ottoman period. The workshop looks at archival challenges and methodological choices. It also asks how concepts such as Ottoman slavery, race and diaspora, developed largely outside the region, apply to Southeast Europe’s own history.
This workshop is supported by seeFField seed postdoc funding at University of Regensburg, Centre for Southeast European Studies at University of Graz and Southeast European History and Anthropology working unit (SEEHA), Institute of History at University of Graz.
