Between the two world wars, a struggle between the new state of Yugoslavia and noble landowners who still possessed vast parts of its territory emerged, in which corruption played a key role. This book looks at this struggle through the lens of the so-called Afera Turn Taksis (‘Thurn and Taxis Affair’), focusing on the noble dynasty Thurn and Taxis, who was the largest private owner of forests in the new kingdom.

Jelena Jorgačević-Kisić, a long-time religion journalist for the government-critical weekly Vreme in Belgrade, will talk about the status of freedom of media and freedom of expression in a country that currently can be described as an electoral autocracy. The media landscape is characterized by soft-censorship, threats and violence toward journalists, and forms of hate speech, all of which threaten the freedom of expression.
